Foods that contain caffeine such as- coffee, tea, chocolates, ice-cream and even Coca-Cola (!) should be avoided during night hours. These will make you rather active than usual and deprive you from falling asleep.

Up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day is said to be safe for most healthy adults. That’s about the same amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of cola or two “energy shot” drinks. So, try limiting your caffeine intake to daytime.

Having a glass of wine or two may reduce anxiety and help you fall asleep even faster, but it hinders the quality of your sleep. Drinking alcohol at night decreases REM sleep, which can rather result in drowsiness the next day and even make you feel like you had no sleep at all.

In the morning, carbohydrates may give you a boost of energy but it will only sustain for an hour or so. Whereas proteins and fats will take longer to digest and make you feel energized for an extended period of time.
